Real bride interview - Debbie & Dustin

Debbie and Dustin's wedding day was set in this quiet oceanfront Jamaican destination next to crystal-clear Caribbean and five star luxury with no one else around apart from just the two of them. Such a romantic and sophisticated way to get married.

Set on a peninsula jutting into a bay, the Secrets Resort and Spa in Montego Bay, Jamaica has far reaching ocean views, perfect for a destination wedding. I loved creating Debbie's special dress, the Lilian, a slinky, bias cut wedding dress with a contrast satin sash.

Here are are Debbie's top tips for anyone looking to get married abroad.

The background;

How did you and your husband meet?

Dustin used to run a wine bar in the city and I was one of his best customers!

What’s your engagement story?

We had been together for 15 years and decided that it was about time that we got married.

Where is your engagement ring from? Did your husband choose it himself?

We flew to Antwerp in Belgium to choose the ring. We picked the diamond and the ring mount separately and then watched as they created my ring for me.

The planning;

How long did you have to plan your wedding and was it enough time?

3 months. It was plenty of time because we only had a very simple ceremony with just us. We threw a big party for 70 people in the summer to celebrate.

Why did you choose your dress? Which dress did you wear?

I spent quite a lot of time researching dresses. I wanted something that was elegant and when I googled simple, elegant wedding dresses you were top of the search list. I actually thought that I wanted a strapless dress but when I tried on the Lilian I fell in love with it.

Why did you choose your venue? Where did you get married?

We went to the hotel in 2012 and absolutely loved it. So much so that we both said if we were to ever get married this is where we would do it.

The memories;

What was your first dance song?

All of me by John Legend.

How did you feel in your dress?

Amazing! There were so many people in the hotel congratulating us and wanting to have a glass of champagne with us – it was just perfect!

How did you feel just before you walked down the aisle?

A little bit nervous but mainly very excited to be marrying the love of my life!

How many bridesmaids did you have? Where did you find your bridesmaids dresses from?

No bridesmaids, just an intimate wedding with the two of us.

What was your colour scheme or theme?

Simple yet elegant. No colour scheme as such

What was the best moment of your wedding day?

Oh gosh there were so many best moments!

Having champagne breakfast with my husband to be when one of the waiters sang our wedding song to us.

When we both walked back down the aisle and we got a huge cheer from the people on the beach.

Beautiful candlelit dinner on the beach.

I could go on and on!

What was the funniest thing that happened on the day?

Because I was on my own and Dustin had been shipped off to his groom room it ended up being the photographer who helped me with my dress which was really funny.

Advice;

What’s your best tip for dressing for the big day you’d like to share with other brides?

Try lots of different styles but ultimately go for something that you absolutely love!

What advice would you give to other bride’s planning their wedding?

Enjoy it! Try not to get too stressed which is easier said than done! Use a planner to help you. The hotel provided us with a wedding planner service and it took the headache out of everything.

Did you discover any amazing suppliers that you’d like other bride’s to know about?

Chez Bec jewellery.

Looking back, is there anything you’d change? Is there anything you wish you knew before you started planning your wedding?

I wouldn’t change a thing – it was exactly how we wanted it to be.

What was the most stressful thing about planning your wedding?

With the wedding taking place in Jamaica I just had to trust the hotel’s wedding planners who were amazing!

Finally;

What 3 words would you use to describe your wedding day?

Intimate, elegant and amazing!
